(Berlin, WI) August, 2006 - When opportunity knocks you have to open the door and grab it. That's exactly what Magnum Products LLC of Berlin Wisconsin did after a morning news cast in early June announced that the new head coach of the Green Bay Packers, Mike McCarthy wanted to hold some of the Packer training camps at night. Just one issue, Clarke Hinkle Field does not have lights.
Magnum Products LLC, a leading manufacturer of mobile light towers, generators, water trailers, and trash pumps saw this dilemma as an opportunity to be a part of the Green Bay Packers' road to success this year. Magnum contacted the Green Bay Packers immediately offering the services of their Mobile Light Towers as a viable solution to the light issue. Magnum, one of two manufacturers competing for the opportunity met with Packers officials several times providing them with first hand exhibitions of the Magnum Light Tower and how they could provide the right light for the night practices.
Winning the opportunity, Magnum prepared to light up Clarke Hinkle Field, just outside the Don Hutson Center. The Magnum MLT 3060 light tower with its metal halide light fixtures and compact styling compared to traditional stadium lights best suited the team's practice needs. Magnum lights were chosen for their directional flexibility; they can be easily focused and pointed as needed to cover the dark spots and could be installed on both sides of the field.
Uniform light coverage and a flawless transition from daylight to Magnum light were essential to General Manager Ted Thompson, Head Coach Mike McCarthy and the Director of Facility Operations, Ted Eisenreich.
Magnum representatives Art Eichmann and Frank Modrano worked closely with Ted Eisenreich on Thursday with the set up and trial run the night before camp opened. They spent hours strategically placing the light towers along the field and positioning the light fixtures themselves to assure that the entire field had coverage with no dead spots or over-lit areas. Some alterations were made and Magnum brought up four (4) additional light towers on Friday morning for a total of 15 to guarantee the lighting would be perfect for opening night.
Magnum personnel will be on hand each of the night practices to raise and start up the lights at the designated times to be certain that each practice will not miss one beat of light. Shutdown and proper stowage of the 30 foot masts (to insure the continuity of light placement and stability of the set-up) after the practices will be handled by Magnum Products as well.
Friday, opening night of training camp was definitely the true test. It was important that the light transition be perfect not only to the Packer organization but to the Magnum personnel as well. At 7:45pm the light towers were turned on and practice continued without any light disruption. On the side lines Magnum personnel enjoyed the view and felt an overwhelming sense of pride for their company.
When asked, Coach McCarthy admitted he was nervous about the first practice, but only jokingly about whether or not the lights would work.
After Friday's practice as the lights were being shutdown Coach McCarthy approached Ted Eisenreich and Magnum's Art Eichmann on the sidelines. He stood in front of them and asked" Well, how do you guys think it went?"
As Ted and Art exchanged glances they said," How do you think it went?"
"I think it went great!" said McCarthy smiling. The Coach then exchanged a hearty handshake with Magnum's Art Eichmann.
In this busy, robust and guarded life of the NFL it is nice to know sweet success can be awarded with a simple smile and handshake between two men.
